Music has occupied a pre-eminent place within Abbotsleigh School since it was founded in 1885.  Today, Abbotsleigh School enjoys a reputation as one of the finest schools in Australia for learning and performing chamber music, orchestral music and chamber choral works. Abbotsleigh School has won awards for embracing innovation and excellence in its music programme. These include the Flame Award for school excellence in music making and 1st place in the Summa Cum Laude Youth Music Festival in Vienna. In both 2017 and 2018, Abbotsleigh students came first in the State for the final Higher School Certificate Exams.

The Abbotsleigh School Music Department, led by the dynamic music advocate, Kimbali Harding, brings together a team of outstanding music educators, musicians and composers.  Amongst the range of school ensembles, the Abbotsleigh chamber choir and string orchestra consist of exceptional students, many of whom have performance diplomas and have participated in prestigious National and International competitions. Some of these girls have high expectations of furthering their music studies in Europe when they finish school.

Alumni from Abbotsleigh school have attended the Juilliard School and Curtis Institute of Music while some are now professors in institutions such as the Faculty of Music at Yale. Many alumni are playing in Australian orchestras as well as International ensembles such as the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the National Symphony Orchestra in the USA.

The chamber choir and string orchestra have performed in concerts at the Sydney Town Hall and Sydney Opera House. They have also embarked on tours to Britain, Italy, Austria and Germany where they have performed at Lambeth Palace, Canterbury Cathedral and Notre Dame, Paris. These groups have had professional partnerships with soloists including a series of workshops and concerts with international Baroque specialist, Matthew Greco and his ensemble The Muffat Collective. The Choir has also worked with the prestigious vocal ensemble, The Song Company.

The school has a policy of total participation in music. This allows the opportunity for every girl to perform at a high level in Australia’s premier venue the Sydney Opera House.  Dedicated musicians such as those in the chamber orchestra regularly perform major works from a variety of styles and periods. Abbotsleigh School often commissions works from Australian composers such as Dan Walker, Anne Boyd, Nicholas Vine and Elena Kats-Chernin. The string orchestra and choir have undergone many tours overseas performing Australian music amongst its repertoire.
